Kevin Hart is one of the most successful comedians on earth, but his sense of style is no joke. With a new stand-up concert movie, “What Now?” out Oct. 14 and a debut album from Motown Records as his hip-hop alter ego Chocolate Droppa expected later in the fall, Mr. Hart, 37, will have plenty of opportunities to showcase his largely monochromatic look. He took a moment to discuss his five fashion favorites and the styling tip he picked up from David Beckham.

Shirt Nothing beats a comfortable Barneys New York T-shirt. There’s not a lot to it, but it’s well done. I’m a black-and-white T-shirt kind of guy. There’s not a whole lot of color in my closet.

Suit If I had to pick a suit, I’d say this Valentino suit that I’ve yet to wear. It’s a checkered woven print, and there are two different shades of dark green. I’m waiting for the right event to wear it to. I had it tailored really nicely. I have found brands that cater to what you’d call a petite man — the Saint Laurent suits, the Christian Dior suits — but I live by a tailor. Clothes that fit are clothes that complement your shape and body. When you understand that, you understand what works on you. Otherwise, a suit will swallow you.

Pants I’m pretty much in love with Saint Laurent’s basic denim. They’ve done a good job with the ripped jeans. It’s not too much and it’s faded well. You know who else is making good jeans? John Elliott. His stuff is really nice. I also love his T-shirts.

Shoes I am a sneakers guy. I like simplicity. I’m very basic with my colors, too: black or white or the occasional burgundy. That’s true of my entire closet. If you go with the basic lane, you don’t ever have to throw clothes away. If you stay away from trends, you don’t have to keep changing with the Joneses. That’s something that happened with my style as I’ve gotten older. When you’re older, your style is a representation of where you are in life, your level of maturity. I consider myself a very mature man at this stage. The way I’m dressing and spending on clothes is just a smarter way.

I’m all over the John Elliott shoe line. Saint Laurent also does a good job with sneakers. Gucci, the latest designs that are closer to the classic signature style, I love that. And Common Projects, the aesthetic is me. I also love a pair of very nice boots, though. I got a pair of Balenciaga boots. One thing I stole from David Beckham is the dirty biker boot. He does dirty biker boot right.

Accessory I’m a watch fanatic. Always have been. You name it, I probably have it. Now, my favorite watch in rotation is probably the 40th-anniversary Audemars Piguet Extra-Thin Royal Oak skeleton watch. There were only 40 of them made.
