The 3,400-year-old painted limestone bust of Nefertiti, on permanent display at Berlin’s Neues Museum, is so stunningly lifelike and lovely that it more than lives up to the Egyptian queen’s name, which loosely translates to “the beautiful one has come.” A new exhibition titled “In the Light of Amarna”—opening at the museum December 6, a century, to the day, after archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt unearthed the statue at Tell el-Amarna—puts her majesty in context. Among the hundreds of artifacts from Borchardt’s excavation are carved reliefs that portray Nefertiti not only as a sovereign and religious figure but also as a mother playing with her daughters. imlichtvonamarna.de
