After moving to Reno, Nev., from Washington, D.C., Justin Race went online to find a local woman to date. Instead, he found himself in an intense game-based relationship with a woman working in China.

Ben Platt, who stars in the Netflix TV show “The Politician,” reads Mr. Race’s essay, “Words With (I Wish We Were More Than) Friends.
