Decades before design dealers started sidling up to art galleries at international fairs, American sculptor Ken Price was gleefully erasing distinctions between handcrafted ceramics and high art. A central presence in Southern California’s postwar scene, Price died in February at the age of 77, only months away from the debut of his 50-year retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Fittingly, the exhibition environment for Price’s seductive works was conceived by fellow L.A. iconoclast and longtime friend Frank Gehry. September 16, 2012–January 6, 2013; lacma.org
