The actor’s happy presence was a breath of fresh air after all the power-suiting we normally associate with his image.

It was just hours after Logan Roy’s mid-flight death when Brian Cox, the 76-year-old Scottish actor who shot to late-career fame playing the brutal family patriarch and media mogul, was spotted on the streets of New York, beaming and very vital indeed.

Caught on his way to the Ed Sullivan Theater for an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Cox — who recently told The Times that a lot of American television goes “past its sell-by date” — looked as if his exit from the HBO show had resuscitated him.

Unlike Logan, whose muted wardrobe was a master class in the signifiers of power and the relative indifference to its trappings, Cox was a blast of exuberant, almost garish color. Beaming and hugging fans, Cox was wearing a brick red suede Western shirt with brass snap buttons from Savas, matching ankle boots from the brand, a green Falconeri cashmere crew neck and rumpled light blue Vince denims.

The red Apple Watch on Cox’s wrist was a far cry from the pricey Breguet Classique he sometimes wore on the show, though the shades seemed somehow familiar. Like the rest of his outfit, they were his favorite pair of Garrett Leights and were pulled by the stylist Venk Modur.

“Seeing him is like seeing Barack Obama after the presidency” in dapper streetwear, the comedian Christina Anthony said on Instagram. At least in style authority, some guys remain in control.
