The past is not forgotten for San Francisco–based architect Andrew Skurman. In fact, it is a constant source of inspiration for his eponymous firm’s elegant projects throughout the Golden State. A handsome new book, Contemporary Classical: The Architecture of Andrew Skurman (Princeton Architectural Press, $60), pairs 20 of the architect’s residential and resort designs with floorplans, watercolor studies, architectural diagrams, and photos of his many historical reference points, which range from the Temple of Zeus at Nemea, Greece, to L’Ermitage de Madame de Pompadoour at Fontainebleau, France. The homes are grouped by style and showcase not only Skurman’s talents, but also those of his frequent collaborators, including interior designers Suzanne Tucker and Steven Volpe.
