Known for her beautiful hand-knotted rugs crafted by artisans in Nepal, Stephanie Odegard has also long been recognized for her leadership in bringing social responsibility to contemporary design. She has been a standard-bearer for Good Weave, an organization that strives to prevent child labor and certify ethical working conditions. Now the designer’s eponymous collection has a showroom that reflects her inspiring mind-set. Created by New York–based architect Stephen Wanta in the New York Design Center, the recently redesigned space is light-filled, open, and calm—exactly what Odegard wanted. “People feel peaceful here,” she says.
The plank floors were custom made of reclaimed maple wood, and the industrial-style ceiling displays an array of lighting fixtures. The 10,000-square-foot showroom employs hanging rugs to create temporary “rooms,” each with its own minimalist design. “We display our rugs as art—or fashion,” Odegard says, “because buying one is like buying an evening gown or a fine fur.” While each “room” showcases the carpets, it also features complementary designs such as a silver metallic chaise by Paul Mathieu or a gold lotus cocktail table by Viya Home. Says Odegard, “Everything we carry is jewelry that goes in the home.”
