Washington state has long been home to Dale Chihuly, whose organic sculptures and Pilchuck Glass School helped usher in the contemporary-glass movement. Now the artist’s work has a new residence there, as well. Spread over one and a half acres at the foot of Seattle’s Space Needle and designed by Chihuly and landscape architecture firm AHBL, “Chihuly Garden and Glass” displays the artist’s most significant works throughout an exhibition hall, outdoor sculpture gardens, and a 40-foot-tall glass-and-steel building known as the Glasshouse.

The exhibition hall’s eight galleries contain examples of Chihuly’s best-known series—from Glass Forest, one of his first large-scale installations, to Persian Ceiling, a version of which also adorns the lobby of the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas.

Inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and the Crystal Palace in London, the Glasshouse includes a 100-foot-long suspended sculpture composed of over a thousand individually blown pieces.

The gardens integrate Chihuly’s smaller works into the landscape and provide a backdrop for four massive sculptures—the prickly Citron Icicle Tower measures 30-feet tall.

“Chihuly Garden and Glass” is open daily, 10:30 A.M. to 10:30 P.M.; 305 Harrison St., Seattle, Washington; 206-753-4940; chihulygardenandglass.com
