Equal parts fine artist and furniture designer, Christophe Côme is known for fusing gutsy metal with refined glass to make sculptural tables, screens, light fixtures, and other creations. For his latest body of work, on view at the Cristina Grajales Gallery in New York, he expanded on that signature vocabulary, experimenting with an array of new materials and—in a departure—color. The range of those inspired efforts was revealed on a recent visit to Côme’s Paris studio, where gilded carved-wood plaques distinguish one spectacular cabinet and faceted lava-stone tiles glazed in a vibrant shade of green clad another. Côme, shown here with several of his pieces, says that until recently he “was a bit scared” to incorporate vivid hues. An unfounded fear, to be sure. Through January 25, 2013; cristinagrajalesinc.com
