Helsinki, though smartly turned out enough to be crowned the 2012 World Design Capital, is still at times an overwhelming city—and city folks can always use a break. Finns and visitors will now find one in Narinkka Square at the Kamppi Chapel of Silence, designed by local firm K2S Architects. The sanctuary’s curved, windowless façade fends off urban clamor, while the alder-lined interior glows in the arctic sun, thanks to a clever skylight along the ceiling’s edge. But there are no formal services at the multifaith venue, just quiet contemplation on the simple pews and chats in the foyer, whose pale concrete walls act as a sort of air lock between the world outside and the wondrous room within.
