By now the idea of a pop-up store is nothing new, but what about a pop-up hotel? It’s an innovative concept that Design Hotels, the German-based company that represents more than 200 independent, style-focused properties around the world, first tried this past winter, at Papaya Playa in Tulum, Mexico. Following the success of that venture, Design Hotels has just opened its second seasonal pop-up, San Giorgio Mykonos, on the lively Greek island of the same name.

Originally built in the 1990s by a local fisherman, the postcard-perfect white stucco hotel building was recently purchased by Thomas Heyne and Mario Hertel, owners of the famous Paradise Club, located just next door. The duo approached Design Hotels founder and CEO Claus Sendlinger to transform the 34-room property into a hip temporary hub for locals and visitors to gather during the summer season. The interiors, by Design Hotels’ former creative director Michael Schickinger and Berlin-based stylist Annabell Kutucu, recall ’60s bohemian chic, with abundant natural materials, handmade fabrics, and vintage pieces sourced from Athens flea markets. “Our goal was to create a place that has a laid-back atmosphere,” Schickinger says. “We wanted to bring a warmth and radiance to the spaces, yet keep an overall feeling of ease and lightness.”

Each of the rooms is uniquely decorated, with an eclectic mix of items like canopied beds, cotton-matelassé quilts, and traditional Greek woven-rush stools. Schickinger’s personal favorite is room No. 72, with sand-color walls and a generous terrace overlooking the azure Aegean Sea. The largest suite is the 700-square-foot Famosa, named for the celebrated DJs who will be invited to stay there during their stints at Paradise Club.

The two-acre grounds offer numerous spots for relaxing, be it by the pool, on a hammock in the palm garden, or on a private floating platform on the sea. For guests who are more actively inclined, there are yoga classes. And after working up an appetite, visitors can retire to the poolside Cantina Restaurant and Bar, which serves market-fresh Mediterranean dishes such as mussels with bacon and cider and a local fish stew known as Aegean kakavia. The charmingly rustic setting is outfitted with rough-hewn communal tables and cozy lounge chairs and is lit by sparkling lanterns at night.

San Giorgio Mykonos will remain open through October 31. From $150/night. For more information, visit sangiorgio-mykonos.com or call 800-337-4685.
