The past subjects of New York–based photographer and filmmaker Andrew Zuckerman have included exotic animals and birds—a great horned owl, a six-banded armadillo—as well as personalities such as Frank Gehry, Desmond Tutu, and Clint Eastwood, among others. The intimacy and hyperrealism of his portraits—Zuckerman shoots subjects in front of a signature stark-white backdrop—remain consistent regardless of what (or who) is in front of the lens, as seen in his previous publications, such as Creature (2007) and Wisdom (2008), and his most recent work, Flower (Chronicle Books, $75).
True to its title, the newly-released hefty monograph features 150 gorgeous close-ups of as many flower species. From the spiny spider orchid to the billowy angel’s trumpet, the lush, oversize images prove to be individual works of art. The tight focus of the photos allows nature’s incredible details to take on an almost surreal dimension. The leaves, the textures, the petals, even the pollen are all mesmerizingly provocative—in a most elegant way.
