What you watched, read and listened to this year.
Welcome, and Merry Christmas to those celebrating the holiday today. Perhaps you’ve been opening presents, perhaps cooking a feast, or caring for or hanging out with those you love. You might be working today, or hunkered down with a book. Hopefully, whatever you’re doing, you’re somewhere warm and safe.
Earlier in the week, I shared the At Home team’s favorites from 2020. Today, we’re featuring contributions from your contributions: what you watched, read, listened to, and otherwise did to pass the time this year. I love a “best of” list. I love to find out about all the stuff I might have missed in the past year, then add them all to my queues and to-do lists. Have a look at At Home readers’ collaborative Best of 2020, and if you’re inspired, send us your own selections. I’ll share more next week.
Sydney Cummings workouts on YouTube. She’s motivating, entertaining and makes me actually look forward to exercising. —Randi, 37, Valhalla, N.Y.
My husband, dog and I watch 30 minutes of “The Golden Girls” just before bed every night. It ensures that we leave whatever awfulness happened in the news that day behind us. —Judith, 77, Cambria, Calif.
I ran over 500 miles during the year and sometimes I’d play “Perpetuum Mobile” by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra over and over as I did so, ugly crying or laughing with joy. I left it all on the road. Entered my house new. —Martha, 48, Nutley, N.J.
“The Address Book: What Street Addresses Reveal About Identity, Race, Wealth, and Power.” Fascinating how addresses around the world came to be! —Angela, 44, New York
The podcast “Home Cooking” with Samin Nosrat and Hrishikesh Hirway. It wasn’t just the cooking tips and recipe ideas, but Hrishikesh’s terrible puns and Samin’s snort-laughs that got me through some tough times. —Emily, 49, The Colony, Texas
Beverly Weidner’s “The ‘Garden Blooms and Heirlooms Mix’” playlist on Spotify. She does a monthly mixtape, and this one was on in our house almost every morning. —Jennifer, 42, Los Angeles
Listening to 90.7 WFUV every day while I worked from home. There’s no other FM station that plays a better mix of tunes. —Keri, 38, Massapequa, N.Y.
All of the Taylor Swift this year. I was supposed to go to her concert this summer, but all of the new music from “Folklore” and “Evermore” made up for it. —Julia, 19, Buffalo
The book “Hamnet,” by Maggie O’Farrell. Beautiful language! One of my all-time favorites. —Terrie, 73, Louisville, Ky.
Doing chair workouts online with Deron Buboltz on Grow Young Fitness. —Mary, 71, St. Paul, Minn.
“The Hilarious World of Depression” by John Moe, a book that has helped me find humor in my low points. Moe also has a podcast where he interviews many mental health sufferers and advocates. —Zienelle, 20, Miami
