Former fashion editor Courtney Kivela Robinson conceived her company, Birdkage, one afternoon while she was painting. She found herself admiring the colorful patterns that accidental splatters left on her apron, and a business idea was born. Although those splatters never found their way into her designs, they inspired her to create a collection of classic, beautifully designed aprons with sophisticated details—striped linens and floral prints with metal grommets or studs. Launched in July 2010, Birdkage (the name comes from Robinson’s childhood nickname, Birdy) has since expanded to include tea towels, tote bags, and scarves, sold by nearly 40 retailers nationwide. The latest line, the summer-themed Sand & Surf, was sparked by Robinson’s love of beaches and features pieces in natural linen or striped cotton with names like Saline and Brittany. “In creating Birdkage, I was inspired by the belief that fashion is a part of life,” Robinson says. “Sometimes it’s dramatic and awe-inspiring, but it shouldn’t be without an element of practicality or fun.”

Aprons come in full-length bib or shorter half-apron styles and range from $37 to $64. For a list of retailers or to buy online, visit birdkagestyle.com
