American haute couturier Ralph Rucci is famed for the soulful austerity of his clothing for exactingly elegant women, but if the New York–based talent ever decides to take a career detour, art might be the right perch. A new exhibition of the designer’s artwork, called “Ralph Rucci: Ascension,” has recently opened at San Francisco’s Serge Sorokko Gallery.

On display are over 30 eye-catching acrylic and mixed-media works produced on canvas, with influences ranging from Abstract Expressionism to Japanese culture to the mysterious scrawls of Cy Twombly. The exhibition is on view through January 18 and includes enigmatic works that Rucci has created over the past two years, several of them bearing sweeping brushstrokes that are collaged, here and there, with scraps of silken fabrics.
