Relaunched a few years ago by private investors dedicated to restoring the brand’s reputation as a maker of singular jewelry, gem-covered eggs, and other precious objects, Fabergé recently unveiled a dazzling store on New York’s Upper East Side. The 850-square-foot Madison Avenue space is the first American location for the firm, which was founded in Russia in the mid-19th century and shut down in the wake of the 1917 Revolution—though an offshoot, Fabergé et Cie, was established in Paris in the ’20s and remained in operation until about a decade ago.
The new boutique’s interior is decorated with silk curtains, tufted wall panels, and Louis XV- and Louis XVI-style furnishings, setting a luxurious tone for the jeweled creations presented in elegant, high-gloss display cases. A latticework façade designed to mimic the Coronation Egg, made in honor of Czar Nicolas II in 1897, is in the works for the outside of the shop.
One of the standout pieces in the collection is the Serpent Egg pendant, created to mark the store’s opening. It features a peach-color egg hand-engraved in a gold guilloche pattern and encircled by a diamond-encrusted snake. Fabergé also debuted a line of intricate jewels called Les Précieuses, which draws upon the firm’s ties to New York high society during America’s Gilded Age and will be available exclusively at the Manhattan boutique.
