Harry Tomás Rimalower was riding out a perfect storm on Dec. 18, 2022, when he matched with Margaret Anne Hunt on the dating app Bumble.

“I was getting a divorce, a new job and a new apartment,” said Mr. Rimalower, 36, a lawyer at the Los Angeles office of Hanson Bridgett. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in visual and environmental studies from Harvard, and received a law degree from the University of Chicago.

That evening, when he received a notification that they had matched, he was watching a Netflix show with his parents at their condo in Beverly Hills, where he was staying while on the hunt for a new apartment. (He found one a week later.)

“Hi” is all Dr. Hunt, 38, a psychologist who goes by Molly, messaged him on the app, which requires women to make the first move.

Dr. Hunt is a co-director of Santa Monica Psychology Group in Santa Monica, Calif. She graduated with a bachelor’s in human biology from Stanford, and received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

She had gone on around 100 dates, as many as five in one weekend, since her separation from her husband in 2021. She would be Mr. Rimalower’s first date since he separated from his wife a few weeks earlier.
