How do you know when you are in love? No 1-800-line psychic will tell you. No notice sent by registered mail. Not even a ping from your iPhone. But there are a million ways of figuring it out, and we’ve asked some people when they knew. Here is one way:
When her lyrics move you.
The singer and songwriter Andy Grammer, 33, agreed to help Aijia Lise, a music school classmate, write a song for a dying friend in the hospital. She’d heard of Mr. Grammer’s “Kathy Grams,” ditties he had uploaded to YouTube to boost the spirits of those in need of cheer, like his mother, Kathy, before she died of breast cancer in 2009.
It was during one of these songwriting sessions that he gave her a double-take and realized he was falling for her.
“It was Aijia’s lyrics,” he said. “She was just so smart, and that we met this way, it got me. I was like, ‘We can write music together.’”
Mr. Grammer wrote his song, “Fresh Eyes,” after waking up with Ms. Lise, now his wife, while they were on vacation in New Orleans. She opened her eyes and started rapping a Big Sean song, profanities and all.
“She had bedhead. I didn’t even know she knew that song, and I thought, ‘This is amazing.’ It’s these little moments, the authentic ones, that get me every time.”
We would like to hear about the moment you knew — and how you knew — that you were in love. Share your story with us here.
